Prior to 1907, South 5th
Street was not listed in the Austin City Directory. Although listed in 1909
through 1913, the listing reflected no residences until 1914, when Cassone
Barnett and Damon Brown (noted as “colored”) were listed as residing on the
west side of S. 5th, between James and Gibson. (Later directories reflect the family name
of Barnett, but show them to have resided south of Gibson St.) That same year, one E. A. Cooper, a dairy
hand, was shown to reside on Fredericksburg Rd., which is now S. Lamar. The first instance in Austin
City Directories of a residence numbered 1200 on S. 5th is in
1916. 1200 is listed as the residence
of Edward A. Cooper, with the additional note of “a dairy.” Pearl Blackmoore, who resided at 1200 in
1944 and 1945, and at 1114 S. 5th from 1947 until her death in 1998,
stated that she was told by a friend who grew up west of South Lamar, that 1200
had been a dairy in 1910, because he passed it daily on his way to and from
Fulmore School on South Congress. |
